SABOD DANCE SYLLABUS

SABOD strives to make dance accessible to everyone and we offer one of the longest standing dance teacher qualification structures in South Africa for Tap, Modern and Hip Hop.

Our syllabus provides a platform for beginners of all ages as well as an Associates Programme for experienced dancers looking to obtain a teaching qualification.

SABOD’s Associate syllabus format focuses on technique and the essential building blocks required to become a dance teacher.

We believe that our syllabus provides an essential foundation for any aspiring dance teacher.

Tap Dancer

Our tap syllabus is one of the most comprehensive tap syllabus structures available in South Africa. The syllabus comprises both theory and practical elements to produce well rounded dancers that are both technically and practically competent.

The tap syllabus caters for tiny tots through to grade 12 (advanced dancers/teachers).

modern syllabus

Our modern syllabus is extensive and focuses on building solid foundations for dancers from beginners to advanced. Our comprehensive technique-focused syllabus provides theoretical and in-depth practical dance education.

The modern syllabus starts with creative movement for toddlers through to grade 12 (advanced level dancers/teachers).

Dance Styles

hip hop syllabus

SABOD offers an extensive hip hop syllabus focused on building solid foundations for dancers of all levels, from beginners to advanced. With both theoretical and practical components, our knowledge-focused syllabus empowers aspiring dancers and teachers by providing education on multiple street dance styles including hip hop, popping, locking, breaking, house, whacking, krump, dancehall, pantsula, vogue and litefeet. 

The hip hop syllabus caters for step up (beginners) through to level 12 (advanced level dancers/teachers).

AFRO FUSION syllabus

SABOD is currently completing its Afro Fusion syllabus.  Afro Fusion dance is a vibrant and eclectic dance style that blends traditional African dance movements with modern dance styles like hip-hop, house, and even jazz, creating a dynamic and innovative style. 

 

It draws inspiration from various African dance styles, including those from West Africa, South Africa, and the Congo.

The SABOD Associate Programme offers committed dance educators and advanced students a structured, professional pathway to excellence. It combines rigorous practical and theoretical training in Modern, Tap and Hip‐Hop. Grounded in SABOD’s multi‑style syllabus—the programme fosters versatile educators ready to support both competitive dancers and learners of all levels.

 

  • Advanced Levels & Teaching Certification
    Participants progress through Pre‑Associate to full Associate status. At these levels, candidates must demonstrate proficiency in both practical technique and dance theory—culminating in qualification to teach SABOD syllabus classes and sit as external examiners 

  • Examiner & Teacher Development
    The programme prepares individuals to become SABOD‑accredited teachers—and for those who aspire even further, paves the way towards examiner accreditation. This ensures that SABOD maintains its high teaching standards nationwide.

SABOD EXAmination board

SABOD boasts a dedicated Examination Board. The board is composed of esteemed dance educators and syllabus specialists, which consistently reviews, refines, and expands the various syllabi to ensure the quality and development of the curriculum.

Through their expertise, ongoing learning, and dedication, the board ensures the syllabi stays relevant, dynamic, and reflects the latest trends in dance education.

JUDGE'S  course

Judges not only preside over SABOD competitions, they ensure that the standard of dance is upheld and that dancers are given the opportunity to grow and improve each time they take to the stage and compete.

SABOD offers a comprehensive course for teachers, choreographers and professional dancers who are interested and passionate about dance and upflifting competitive dance.
